Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is the projected winner of the Maryland Republican Senate primary, the Associated Press reports.
“We have always been an underdog,” Hogan wrote on an X post just after 9 p.m.
Hogan served as the governor of Maryland from 2015 to 2023. He was active voice in politics since his governorship, serving as the co-chair of the No-Labels movement – a centrist political organization- until early 2024.
Hogan has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, who will appear on the same general election ballot as Hogan.
This win sets up one of the most closely-watched Senate elections in the country with Hogan is attempting to disrupt Maryland’s recent streak of Democratic senators. Maryland’s last Republican senator, Charles Mathias, left office in 1987.
“The Washington politicians win by perpetuating polarization, but Maryland is known as the state of middle temperament. We believe in common decency and common sense,” Hogan wrote on an X.
The Maryland Senate election could flip control of the Democrat-led Senate, with the retirement of West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin and other close elections across the country.
As of 9:30 p.m., Hogan has over 63% of the Republican vote with 43% of expected votes reported.
In November, Hogan will face either Rep. David Trone or Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, whose Democratic primary is too close to call.
